Golf: 5 Etiquettes to Keep in Mind
June 21, 2023

The sport of golf is a gentleman’s game, which is why proper etiquette must be followed before and during the game. The purpose of laying down etiquettes for this game is to ensure the overall safety of players in the course of the game and make the game enjoyable for players.

Whether one is a newcomer to golf playing or has been in the game for so long, it is essential to learn and practice these rules in the course of playing every game. Irrespective of your level of expertise in this sport, here are 5 etiquettes that would help one enjoy golf playing.

1. Always be safety conscious

Golf playing can send in the adrenaline rush of excitement and nervousness, but it is essential to prioritize safety. So, before swinging a club, it is necessary to ensure that other group members are at a safe distance. Even during practice, avoid consciously swinging at another player to prevent harmful objects like stones or twigs from hitting another player.

Another way to be safety conscious is to avoid hitting a ball until it is certain that the group ahead is not within reach. Sometimes, the ball may be headed in a direction that would undoubtedly cause a hit on a player; the right thing to say at this point is “Fore”- which is a form of warning to other players.

2. Be regular and punctual

When a golf-playing session has been scheduled, it is terrible to cancel on group members at the last minute. Except for an emergency or a reasonable excuse, dodging a golf-playing session for trivial reasons does not speak well of a good golf player.

Also, it is one thing to be present at every golf playing or practice session; it is another thing to keep to time consistently. If it is a practice with a pro or even group members, it is necessary to be present at least fifteen minutes before time to leave a good impression.

3. Observe cart rules

The wheels on carts can sometimes destroy sensitive areas; that is why it is ideal to keep carts away from greens. Most times, some signs show cart rules, it is essential always to obey them. When a sign shows “cart path only” or “observe the 90-degree rule”, it is necessary to follow these instructions.

4. Be conscious of your appearance

As a golfer, how one dresses to a golf course creates an impression on team players and members. Best players in golf like Tiger Woods and Bobby Jones have always been conscious of their appearance. Ideally, one’s shirt should be tucked in, with a cap-faced front and neat shoes. Having a haggard or tacky appearance always gives the wrong impression.

5. Always switch off the phone or keep out of reach

Golf playing is done with a group, so the constant checking of one’s phone might give the impression of disinterest in the game. Ideally, phones should be kept out of reach and only accessed at reasonable times when they can not be seen as a distraction from bonding with nature and friends.
